Colorium Laboratorium is dedicated to sharing ideas about how color influences our daily lives. Through playful exploration, hands on activities and participation we aim to inspire communities with new, empowering ideas abou the world around them. Please see our project descriptions below.
Color Wheelz:
Color Wheels is a custom designed van that travels to different neighborhoods in New York City. It is a platform for visitors to reflect on the presence of color within their communities. Color puzzles, neon wire, word charts, velcro shapes, color coded musical instruments and projected images fill the inside of the van. Decals and magnets cover the outside. These colorful objects are manipulated by visitors to represent the color of their neighborhood. As a mobile installation, color wheels aims to share these representations with as many people as possible.
Before the van moves to a new location participants customize its appearance. They are asked to consider the color of objects that surround them, such as buildings, people, clothes, food and nature. This interaction is a unique opportunity for people to represent their communities in a visual way, which results in a colorful commentary on the neighborhoods of New York City. Once the color of the van is adjusted it travels to a different neighborhood. Visitors in the next location see the van as a representation of where it came from. The opportunity to interpret a neighborhood through color initiates critical analysis about how and why color influences everyday living. Sharing these commentaries is a positive way to introduce differences and similarities of color usage in the communities of New York City.
Participating in Color Wheels facilitates new ways of seeing how color relates to culture, communication and perception. I look forward to how various populations within the 5 boroughs of NYC may respond differently and how it may reflect on the appearance of the van. Tracking the outcomes in each location will result in a valuable collection of research data, which will contribute to the field of color theory in a variety of ways. I look forward to tracking the progress of Color Wheels on the web, with maps, photography and video. These endeavors excite me and I am confident that they will inspire new ideas and curiosity about the world of color.
